These organic coffee beans are grown at the base of volcanic mountains in Rwanda’s Northern Province, where fertile soil and high elevation contribute to exceptional flavor development. The coffee is produced by the Abakundakawa Cooperative, founded in 1999. Abakundakawa means “those who love coffee,” a name that reflects the cooperative’s deep commitment to quality, sustainability, and community growth.
Abakundakawa is widely recognized for pioneering Rwanda’s organic conversion program and for making meaningful investments in its members’ well-being—including providing health insurance to cooperative members. Their dedication has helped establish some of the finest organic coffees in Rwanda.
Also part of the cooperative is the Hingakawa Women’s Association, a women-led group focused on empowerment and economic independence. Hingakawa, meaning “let us grow coffee” in Kinyarwanda, represents women who are often heads of their households. Through careful harvesting and processing, these women earn premium prices that support their families and help advance women’s roles in Rwandan society.
